Shakeology

During my years of restricted eating, I’m pretty sure I tried every protein shake, protein bar and supplement on the market. Ever since recovering from my eating disorder, I’ve insisted on using whole foods for proper nutrition. Now that I know what my body actually needs, how many grams of protein my body can actually properly digest and use and how many of the products that were labeled as “healthy” were in fact full of sugar, processed ingredients, chemicals and preservatives, they were pretty easy to cut out of my diet.

When Beachbody launched Shakeology, I stayed out of the hype for about six months. I figured the excitement would die down.

But it didn’t. In fact, the exact opposite happened. I just started hearing more and more about how much people loved it and the changes they were experiencing since being on it. Sure, people were losing weight, but those weren’t the success stories that intrigued me. It was the testimonies of lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, regulated blood sugar, improved regularity, etc. This didn’t seem like your typical weight loss shake.

I caved and began to research. Well, I was finally right about one thing. Shakeology is definitely not your typical weight loss shake. Just check out everything ($45 worth of produce!) that’s in just one shake:

How about the fact that if you wanted to gather all of the ingredients in Shakeology, you’d have to visit at least 17 different countries and go trekking through the rainforest?

Then, came the true test. I bought some. When it arrived, I got up, worked out, then decided to try Shakeology for breakfast. Following a recipe recommended to me by a friend, I put a scoop of Chocolate Shakeology, 1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 2 TBSPs of PB2 (an awesome powdered peanut butter that mixes great into shakes) and 1 tsp of JELL-O’s Sugar Free Fat Free Butterscotch pudding mix, ice & water into the blender. (Shakeology comes in two delicious flavors — Chocolate and Greenberry — that can be customized like you see in my recipe here to your taste preferences.)

It tasted INCREDIBLE! I felt like I was splurging with ice cream. Because of my research, I knew it was good for me…but it sure didn’t taste like it was healthy! But the best part — I kept me full for FOUR HOURS! And I drank it after my workout, which is usually when I find myself wanting extra snacks. So how was it that a drink that even with the ingredients I added only consisted of 250 calories keep me satisfied for that long?

Shakeology is designed to feed your body at the biological and molecular level. Our taste buds may crave certain foods, but our bodies crave the nutrition we need to function at our best. It’s why we can still be hungry a few hours after consuming a fast food value meal. Our bodies may have consumed ample calories to function, but we’re still missing essential nutrients. Shakeology eliminates the guess work for you by giving your body exactly what it needs and removing the toxins it doesn’t.

Also, now that I am endurance athlete, I know all of the extra energy expenditure my body endures on a regular basis. Even though I’m a pretty healthy eater, before Shakeology, I still struggled with properly fueling my body to get through my workouts at maximum capacity. (I don’t like to waste time!) Now, I don’t completely drain my body of the nutrients it needs to power through a tough workout. Shakeology supplies me with enough nutrition to fuel my workouts and my active lifestyle.
